Sarah Mayne
Sarah Mayne is a dynamic Social Work student pursuing a BSW at Marygrove College in Detroit and plans to achieve it by fall of 2014. Upon graduation, Sarah plans to continue her education in the field of Social Work at the graduate level after she spends time focusing on volunteer work. Sarah’s second semester at Marygrove has a focus of increased collegiate life as it relates to challenging social issues in the Detroit community.
Sarah was born in a small town located in the laid back Delta of Mississippi, which is where she lived for the first 12 years of her life. Raised with southern values and southern style passed on by her family, she in-turn has always been proud from where she comes. In 2004 Sarah moved to the culture shocking township of Lake Orion, Michigan along with her father, mother, and older brother. It was a big change to move from the South to the North, but an idealistic opportunity to live within two different cultures that she became appreciative towards. The time finally came for Sarah to graduate from Lake Orion High School, and she did so with honors in 2009. The following fall found Sarah working with zeal towards an Associate's degree in Liberal Arts at Oakland Community College, in her second year she found that her southern hospitality was plentiful enough to help the world; she decided to major in Social Work. Receiving a colorful recommendation from a friend encouraging Sarah to study at Marygrove, she was set on giving the aesthetically pleasing campus a visit. At the end of the campus tour, Sarah was filling out an application, crossing her fingers and hoping to be accepted. A few months later, Sarah received an acceptance letter from Marygrove, along with a healthy Scholarship rewarding the pursuit of her interest.
Sarah has a hard to match passion for helping others and never shies away from an opportunity to do volunteer service. The majority of her volunteer work involves a summer service project, named Salkehatchie, where she repairs homes for the less fortunate. She has volunteered for four summers and because this summer service is located in South Carolina it links her two passions of helping others and traveling, together. A way in which she hopes to provide more of this service is through the Peace Corps, which she plans to join after she has received her Bachelor’s degree in Social Work. In the meantime she plans to continue her volunteer work and studies, as well as remain an active member within the community.
