MISSION
Our
mission is to provide an essential intervention program, serving middle school
and high school students in the Detroit Public School system. The program will
target behavioral and cognitive obstacles faced by at-risk youth and will
implement a critical intervention strategy aimed at eliminating distorted
thinking, beliefs, and attitudes, while integrating productive and positive
thinking, beliefs, attitudes, behaviors and coping skills.
VISION
Our vision
is to transform the current disciplinary process of detention and suspension
into a model that promotes learning, understanding, growth, and support, while
alleviating the stagnation and inefficacy that results under the current model.
WHAT WE DO
This
program will replace idle time spent in detention classes and also serve as a
component of In School Suspension. An intellectual belief system challenging
forms of discipline will be a more efficient path to correcting behavior; in
contrast to punitive, passive time spent in detention or out-of-school
suspension. As an alternative to suspension, expulsion, and detention, our
program offers hands-on learning about acceptable behavior, critical thinking,
coping, and skills to self-assess behavior as well as modes of thinking.
Productive, positive thinking is anticipated to create a “domino effect” among
other students, in addition to those participating in the program.
